There are a TON of training books and DVDs out there. Some are excellent, some middling, some abysmal. Here are some of the ones that I think are genuinely helpful and worth the money. They are listed alphabetically by author's last name.

Books

  • Jean Donaldson, The Culture Clash
  • Jean Donaldson, Train Your Dog Like A Pro
  • Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson, My Smart Puppy
  • Jane Killion, When Pigs Fly!: Training Success with Impossible Dogs
  • Leslie McDevitt, Control Unleashed
  • Pat Miller, Do Over Dogs
  • Pat Miller, The Power of Positive Dog Training

Specific Issues

  • Ali Brown, Scaredy Dog (shyness/fear)
  • Jean Donaldson, Fight! (dog-dog aggression)
  • Jean Donaldson, Mine! (resource guarding)
  • Randy Grim, Don't Dump the Dog! (everything from barking to house soiling to funny rants about dumb reasons people dump their dogs)
  • Debbie Jacobs, A Guide to Living With and Training a Fearful Dog (shyness/fear)
  • Patricia McConnell, The Cautious Canine (shyness/fear)
  • Patricia McConnell, I'll Be Home Soon (separation anxiety)

  • Sheila Boneham, Rescue Matters
  • Elizabeth Hess, Lost and Found
  • Diane Leigh and Marilee Geyer, One at a Time
  • Melinda Roth, The Man Who Talks To Dogs
  • Sue Sternberg, Successful Dog Adoption (with some hesitations: I do not agree with all Sternberg's methods or philosophies, and feel that she is excessively alarmist with respect to temperament testing, in particular. But there is nonetheless a lot of good stuff to be mined here, so I've put it on the list)

DVDs

Susan Garrett, Crate Games Sarah Kalmajs, The Language of Dogs Leslie McDevitt, Control Unleashed (read the book first) Leslie Nelson, Really Reliable Recall
